Joining the AMU
Information for prospective member states
Core Requirement
The AMU's core requirement is mutual recognition of Antarctic borders. All members must recognize existing members' claims and new applicants must accept the Charter upon admission.
What NOT to Do
Please do not apply if any of the following applies
Pre-Application Requirements
Ensure the following before applying
Application Process
How your application is handled
Submit Application
Submit your application through the official form. Note: applications cannot be modified or withdrawn once submitted.
Welcome & Review
Receive a welcome email from the Administrative-General. Your application will be reviewed by all active members.
Monthly Voting
Applications are voted on at least monthly. Approval requires a two-thirds active member majority plus a simple majority of original Charter signatories.
Admission or Rejection
Successful applicants receive an electronic Certificate of Membership and access to member-only venues. Rejected applications cannot be resubmitted for one year.
Important Note
The AMU intentionally maintains strict criteria for membership, and most applications are rejected. The organization does not actively recruit new members. Results of applications are communicated via email — or, according to tradition, by smoke signals from Mount Erebus (white smoke for acceptance).
